Career Chat with Nadia McCowan Hill, Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor.jpg

With a huge selection of gorgeous home style buys to endlessly scroll through, Wayfair is a go-to online destination for all things interiors and decor. Nadia McCowan Hill is their talented Resident Style Advisor, so we caught up with her to find out a little more about her working day…

I open my eyes… Between 5.30am and 6am, which is when my little boys usually wake up. No need for an alarm clock when you have small people to do the job at the crack of dawn!

The first thing I do is…  Have a cup of Earl Grey tea and enjoy a bit of family time. It’s then a mad dash to get everyone ready before I leave the house at 7am.

Breakfast includes… Banana pancakes topped with fresh berries and yoghurt or homemade Bircher muesli, made the night before.

My journey to work is… A chance to catch up on any emails that have come in from our US team overnight. I also use the time to check out interiors blogs and magazines to find new trends and spot emerging talent.

My typical working day begins with… Writing a to-do list for the day and figuring out which projects need to be prioritised.

I’m in charge of… Trend forecasting and content strategy at Wayfair, an online homeware destination, which has one of the world’s largest selections of items for the home and garden. Wayfair stocks pieces to suit every style and budget, so my role is to help curate the enormous selection into understandable slices for our customers –whether they love a streamlined Scandi aesthetic or go loco for bright bohemian or glitzy glam décor.

I’m responsible for a lot of the campaigns that you see on site, from celebrity room makeovers to seasonal edits and also lead on styling for Wayfair events.

Inside my desk draw you’ll find… Stacks of interiors magazines, too many design books to mention, bright lipsticks and some nectarines.

My favourite lunch spot is… A little restaurant called Lamuri very close to my office, which does the most delicious truffle tagliatelle. If I’m feeling healthy, I’ll grab a salad instead.

I beat the 4pm slump by… I don’t usually slump at 4pm as that’s when I high-tail it out of the office to collect my sons from nursery. Wayfair has a great culture when it comes to family life, so even though my job is fast-paced and busy, I always leave on time.

My bedtime beauty essential is… I wash my face using Espa Balancing Foam Cleanser. I’ll also slather on some Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate if I think my skin needs a bit of a pick-me-up.

A tip for aspiring interior designers? Be fearless in your design approach. Don’t be afraid to bring together elements from different styles and eras and finally, don’t forget a touch of quirk to keep things interesting.
