Beachside Living At The Cary Arms, Babbacombe

Cary Arms Hotel Review.jpg

We recently visited The Cary Arms in Devon, for a touch of beachside living and as a result, didn’t ever want to check-out…

After travelling down a very steep and winding road, the setting of this five star hotel is quite something. Perched on the corner of Babbacombe Bay, all you can see are the fantastic sea views and the blue and white Inn, built in the late 1800s.

We stayed in the ‘Admiral’ room, which has panoramic views of the beautiful coastline and the most amazing bathroom, complete with a roll top bath that looks out onto nothing but blue waters. The décor is neutral and totally chic. Think sandy tones, striped linens, bleached wood, orchids and a cute stick of rock placed on each pillow as a welcome treat. Plus, there are beauty products from The White Company to enjoy and divine white, waffle robes to relax in.

Speaking of relaxation, one of our favourite elements of The Cary Arms, has to be the private terrace with its deck chairs, mini palms and again the views, which we feel we must reiterate wholeheartedly because they are simply so sublime and really set this hotel apart from the competition. We spent many hours sipping a latte and listening to the soothing sounds of the sea on our terrace. Certainly no need for a meditation app here.

Let’s talk food. Inside the restaurant, with its nautical theme and cosy log fire, you can sample some of the best fresh fish that Devon has to offer. Choose from crab, crayfish, sea bass, mackerel, plaice or clams. Although, we truly fell head over heels for the cooked breakfasts, fresh fruit and granola, to set you up for a day of exploring. After which, you can return to a good book and a glass of wine in the Residents Lounge, or book a treatment in the Spa Room, which uses Yon-Ka products.

Away from Babbacombe, you are only a few minutes from bustling Torquay where you can head to great rooftop bars for a cocktail or two, and during the daytime there’s the entire ‘English Riviera’ to see, plus trips to picturesque Brixham with its pastel houses, Dartmouth, Dartmoor and Salcombe, for lovely boutiques and restaurants.

The Cary Arms is perfect for coastal charm, long lazy weekends, or a couple’s retreat, and with only eight rooms you can expect impeccable service. As we said, we really didn’t want to leave, as it seems worlds apart from the busy lifestyles we all lead. So head here for a complete break that will leave you feeling absolutely refreshed and most certainly ready to return for a second visit.
