The power of a mini break shouldn’t be underestimated. Most of us will focus patiently, waiting on that big annual holiday, but actually when you slot in a spontaneous weekend away here and there, sprinkled across the year, it’s far more satisfying (and relaxing) for a quick fix of much-needed downtime…
So where to visit in 2017? Exploring beautiful, English hotels is one of our favourite pastimes and Tewkesbury Park, sitting proudly amongst 163 vast acres of parkland, famous for the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury, is our latest find. The family owned retreat, near to Cheltenham, Gloucester and Worcester, has recently seen a multi-million renovation, and it’s clear to see this has been a thoughtful makeover.
The rooms have the most amazing views over the Gloucestershire countryside and huge golf course, with the generous suites (larger than most flats) offering the perfect spot to sit back with a Nespresso coffee to watch the sunset from the glorious bay windows.
All of the welcome touches are there, too. Giant white robes and slippers, hot water bottles, fruit platters on arrival, a ghd hairdryer and Bramley beauty products, which brings us onto the mega bathroom. Freestanding bath with a TV anyone? How about two, yes two, oversized monsoon shower heads to wake you up before skipping down to breakfast? Tewkesbury Park have got the luxury element covered.
We also enjoyed a massage with Vicky, who introduced us to the Natural Spa Factory products. Free from parabens and nasties, instead of traditional aromatherapy oil, the treatment included back, shoulders, legs, arms and chest massage using the brand’s Raw Coconut Body Oil for super-soft skin.
The dining at the hotel is amazing and the service was also well above standard throughout our stay. We feasted on steak and fish dishes, followed by a cheeseboard and winter puddings. Feeling suitably full, you can spend hours sipping on a red wine by the fire, before heading back for a heavenly sleep.
Be sure to pop into Tewkesbury itself. We found lovely boutiques and cosy pubs, plus a little shop called Replay Vintage, selling gems for the home, jewellery and fashion at great prices.
There’s also a Canine Retreat Experience currently available to indulge both owners and beloved pooch. Enjoy a stay with doggie treats, epic walks, afternoon tea, a three-course meal in the Piano Lounge (including a special ‘dog’s dinner’) and spa voucher, for £199.
