HEALTH: Pre-Workout Smoothies

Wednesday, 27 April 2016

Knowing what to fill your body with before a workout can be difficult. On the one hand, you don't want to be too full that you don't feel like getting up and going for a run, but on the other hand, you do want enough fuel for your body to run on, to get the most from your workout. So, I have developed some smoothie recipes, that not only taste delicious, but are also perfect for giving you that 'boost' you need to complete an effective workout...

Frozen berry with pumpkin seeds

You will need:

1 banana

1 cup of mixed frozen berries

1/2 a cup of almond milk

1/4 of a cup of pumpkin seeds

1 cup of ice

Bananas are a great addition to a smoothie. Research has suggested that just one banana can supply us with enough energy for a 90-minute workout. Bananas are also high in potassium - an essential nutrient for a healthy functioning heart. Whilst being physically active, our bodies need to be running on the right kinds of nutrients. Almond milk and pumpkin seeds are a great source of protein. Protein is one the main nutrients that our bodies rely on to maintain a healthy body.

Matcha tea green machine

You will need:

1 banana

1 teaspoon of green tea matcha powder

1/2 a cup of coconut water

1/2 cup of pineapple

1 cup of ice

This one is my favourites! I always feel so fresh and energised after drinking this smoothie. Matcha powder is extremely high in antioxidants and also supplies you with a great boost of energy. However, do not add more than 2 teaspoons of this as it contains caffeine. As well as making sure our body has enough energy to workout, it is important to make sure it is properly hydrated as well.

Coconut water works wonders when it comes to keeping your body hydrated, which is extremely important when you're about to endure a good workout.

Strawberry protein with chia seeds

You will need:

1 cup of fresh strawberries

1/2 cup of greek yoghurt

1 tablespoon of chia seeds

2 tablespoons of organic whey protein powder

This smoothie is great if you plan on really working those muscles! It is high in protein and taste delicious. Chia seeds are ideal to add to pre-workout smoothies because they are loaded with omega-3 fats for sustained energy, protein, and antioxidants.
