INTERVIEW: Five Minutes With Nica Kim, Founder Of Nica Handbags

Tuesday, 30 August 2016

During her time studying at London College of Fashion, Nica Kim entered (and won) a life-changing design competition. The prize included working at the head office of an international fashion company, who also offered her a job after graduation.

In 2005, she launched a handbag collection and Nica Handbags was born, with the brand now stocked in over 400 boutiques and department stores across the UK. Keen to talk to this girl boss, we chatted to the designer to explore her loves, inspirations and morning rituals…

Nica Kim, Founder of Nica Handbags

How did your career within the fashion industry begin? I moved to the UK to study at London College of Fashion and later won a competition to intern at a fashion accessories company, who went on to create the Nica brand around me. Best competition ever!

Who inspires you? Isabel Marant. I love her varying style. It’s sophisticated, bohemian or even tomboyish at times. I also adore the work of Isabel’s husband, Jérôme Dreyfuss - it’s very practical and effortlessly cool.

Which trends are you currently channeling? I don’t really follow trends but if I do, I like to reinvent them with a quirky twist. I’m a big fan of double denim at the moment.

Your must-have piece from the current Nica collection? The Romalie backpack is my go-to at the moment. It’s been on quite a few of my travels.

Favourite place to relax? At my parents in Seoul. Nothing beats visiting home.

Can't live without... My phone and that’s mainly for snapping inspiration upon my travels.

Your proudest moment was? Seeing bags which I’ve designed in the street.

What’s your morning ritual for a productive day ahead? Whatever my plans for the day, I don’t skip breakfast at home. I never have it in front of my screen in the office, so when I get to work, I can start working without feeling hungry.

Most stylish city? I love London’s eclectic style. Although, it’s been my home for so long now I’m still finding new places to inspire me.

Your perfect weekend includes… A weekend by the beach! Soaking up the sunshine, enjoying new delicious food and just taking some time out to relax from the busy city life.
