WORK LIFE: Five Minutes With Chloe Lee Photography

Wednesday, 31 May 2017

Your wedding day is one of the most precious and important moments of your life; it’s a day you’ll want to look back on and remember for years to come. And what better way to relive your wedding than to pore over an album full of beautiful photos?

Aside from dress fittings, cake tastings and venue hiring - finding the right person to capture your special day can be an incredibly stressful feat. You want someone who makes you feel relaxed and comfortable, but who will pull you out of your comfort zone in order to get the perfect shot.

Alternative documentary wedding photographer, Chloe Lee, does just that. Chloe’s colourful and quirky portfolio highlights her natural creativity and love of photography. She’s determined and professional, and is never afraid to go above and beyond to ensure that her work is of the highest quality. Her testimonials speak for themselves:

"I CANNOT RECOMMEND CHLOE ENOUGH! I met her at a wedding show and she was fun, buzzing with ideas, professional, colourful and everything we could have asked for. Our wedding photos are incredible and so much better than we could have imagined.” We had a quick chat with Chloe about weddings, running your own business and scrapbooking!

When did you first decide that you wanted to be a photographer? Probably about 11 years ago. I wanted to be a forensic photographer to begin with, it wasn’t until I actually pursued work experience and was around a lot of quite disturbing images that I decided it wasn’t the right avenue for me. I then went on to do my photography degree, focusing a lot on fashion, and I somehow stumbled into the world of weddings and fell in love!

What is an average day for you? Every day always starts off with a cup of tea! I then walk to my office (a pastel perfect she-shed in the garden) and answer emails, work on social media or edit images. If I have a wedding then I’ll jump in the car, drive to bridal prep, say ‘hey!’ to everyone and have the best day ever!

How long does it take for you to edit photos from a wedding? It usually takes me around 10 hours to edit a full wedding.

What has been your favourite photography experience? I don’t think I could pick a favourite! Every wedding I photograph is different to the last, I’ve seen glitter stations, silent discos, bouncy castles, axe throwing and hypnotists! I love how my couples do what they want.

How do you achieve a work/life balance? This is probably the one thing I struggle with the most, and I’ve still not got the right balance. I think social media is a problem a lot of the time; I’ll sit down to watch an episode of something on Netflix and I’ll find myself on Instagram posting and liking other photos. I’ve made a conscious effort now though to not answer emails after 6pm.

What do you do to relax and unwind after finishing a job? I love crafting, particularly scrapbooking! There’s definitely something very satisfying about cutting up and sticking bits of paper together.

Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own business? Make sure you have a clear idea first of what you want to do, get the relevant business insurance in place and register with HMRC. Then go for it! There’s so much free and informative help and information out there. Social media is a free and easy way to build your brand and get yourself out there. Don’t let anything hold you back.

Who inspires you? I draw a lot of inspiration from photographers such as Tim Walker and Kirsty Mitchell. I love how they tell stories through their photos and set designs. When I approach a wedding, my main goal is to tell my couple’s story of the day through my photos.

Where can you see yourself and your business in 5 years’ time? Still photographing amazing weddings! I love travelling so I’d definitely like to photograph some more destination weddings (Italy and Canada are top of my list). I’ll travel just about anywhere for a good wedding. I’m also going to be offering video highlight films on top of my photography packages soon so watch this space.
